Lyon Open: Mikael Ymer disqualified after smashing tennis racquet in furious first set outburst towards umpire

Date:

Mikael Ymer was disqualified from the Lyon Open for furiously smashing his racquet on the umpire’s chair.

The Swedish player was playing against Arthur Fils in the round of 16 when he got into a heated altercation with umpire Rogerio Santos over a line call at 5-5 in the opening set.

Ymer was adamant Fils’ shot was wide of the sideline before he casually returned long beyond the baseline, and was in disbelief when the Frenchman was awarded the point.

He immediately declared Santos check the ball mark where he believed it went out but was unsuccessful in his attempt as the Portuguese official refused to leave his seat.

Ymer reluctantly accepted the decision and continued play before he was broken by Fils on the next point.

This caused him to smash his racquet to pieces on the foot of the umpire’s chair in a furious rampage.

The 24-year-old was immediately disqualified and Fils progressed via walkover.

Ymer – ranked world No. 53 – overcame French star and seventh seed Richard Gasquet 6-3 7-5 in the opening round.
