THE BLACK GUY FROM SOUTH LONDON PIONEERING ROCK POP SOUL
Higher Ground OUT NOW | London, Southwark – June 2020
For some, the life that Jo-Ash has led would’ve sent them down the wrong path but it was faith that kept him afloat. Faith and music.
Fans of heartfelt “rock soul-pop” can get their ears grooving to his new single Higher Ground which came out on Thursday 18th June 2020.
It took some time before Jo-Ash found his voice. Family hardships landed him in the foster care system at the age of nine. It was then that he leaned on both his faith and his natural abilities when it came to song. With his risky genre fusions, he started to develop his own style. One that would soon garner the attention of others. That includes Universal Music who invited him to play the Great Escape Festival in April 2019, and groups like The XX who he performed for in 2018. Alongside this, special features on BBC Radio London, and Soho Radio have cemented him as one to watch.
His new single Higher Ground is a “Soul Rock Pop” track exploring the psychological and emotional turmoil left by a lifestyle marred by bad decisions and regrets. In lay man’s terms it’s a song Jo-Ash wrote about his personal journey of being diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder due to severe childhood trauma, and how he has overcome the emotional pain.
The song pushes the boundaries of modern music making and fuses Stevie wonder type funk elements with David Bowie style pop fusions along with the emotional lyrics reminiscent of the legendary Amy Winehouse. Because it doesn’t fit neatly into one particular genre, it’s aptly dubbed: “Soul Rock Pop”.
What’s even more cool is that the drummer for Years And Years, (Paris Jeffree) played on this tune. That addition of celebrity drums gives the song a groove and feel that would have otherwise been lacking in a record of this style.
